In the bad old days, the late night shows were superb. NBC, CBS. Late night started with Steve Allen, and it was all about classy comedy. Jack Parr, Jay Leno, Letterman, and of course, Johnny Carson, hosted the before-bedtime shows.
Guests included luminaries. Bette Davis, Peter Falk, George Carlin, all so young. All with their lives ahead of them. And we got a peek into a nice world, up and coming comics, movie stars, gentle poking at both political parties, and presidents.
At one point, a very funny guy, Craig Ferguson with sidekick Shadow Stevens had the Late, Late on CBS, and joked at the fact that CBS wouldn't even give them money for stage props, like chairs.
CBS got rid of Ferguson, a Scotsman who was terribly proud of having become a U.S. citizen.
I guess that finished him.
CBS prefers people like Colbert, spewing hatred. Now Colbet is presenting himself as a victim. Just like Ellen DeGeneres. And Rosie O'Donnell.
Colbert blames Trump for his firing. Ellen blamed homophobic America. Too bad. Too sad. Ellen was beloved. But once she "came out," her show was everything-gay. Her dog, her plumber. It wasn't that she was gay, it was that her show wasn't funny anymore.
And she didn't understand that.
Same goes for Rosie O'Donnell. Rosie's talk show was a big hit. People loved her, until she wasn't funny. And was so nasty.
Colbert had a time when he was funny, but now all he has left in his bag of tricks is Trump. And no. It isn't Trump's fault CBS canned him. But Colbert he doesn't understand that, either.
Hang tough.
