NATO's not happy. Trump's not happy, either. With NATO. Like the United Nations, it's a one-way relationship, and everyone knows that never works anywhere. But before Trump, no American president ever objected. Recently with the Iran conflict, fair weather friends stood out like sore thumbs. Especially Spain, Italy, the UK and Germany.
They didn't want to help. Germany's Chancellor Merz went further. In an address given to students, Merz ridiculed the U.S. and President Trump. "The Iranians are obviously very skilled at negotiating, or rather very skillful at not negotiating, letting the Americans travel to Islamabad and then leave again without any result."
"An entire nation," he said, "is being humilated by the Iranian leadership."
He was pretty cocky. But unfortunately he over-played his hand. Especially the part about "The Art of the Deal.' The next day Trump declared the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany. I guess Merz gets it now. How youdon't mess around with The Donald.
Hang tough.
